Minimize stress, maximize joy
Life is full of stressors. Here are some helpful tips to treat yourself well:
- Begin the day with a balanced breakfast. Individuals who eat a good breakfast perform better at work and school. A good breakfast also helps with weight management.
- Keep nutrition-packed food handy. Pack your lunch and snacks for the day to help ensure protein and good fat, along with fruits and vegetables, are easily accessible.
- Avoid liquid calories. Juices, sweet drinks, and alcohol are major contributors to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
- Maintain a consistent daily routine – sit down, even if only briefly, to eat something three times a day. Take activity breaks frequently.
- Get some exercise every day, even if it's only 10 to 20 minutes.
- Sleep is a nutrient – poor sleep (generally considered fewer than seven hours) is associated with obesity, diabetes, increased coronary calcification, and decreased immunity.
- Be kind to yourself; smile.

Quit smoking
- Quit For Life®
Quitting tobacco of any kind takes a commitment. And keeping your commitment can be challenging if you're trying to do it on your own. Research shows that counseling or support in combination with medication (nicotine replacement and/or prescription medication) offers the best chance at breaking free from tobacco.
Whether you've smoked for six months or 16 years, we've got someone you can partner with to help you be successful. It's up to you to find what works for you —support groups, telephone counseling, and classes with free medications – or a combination. Your Providence Health Plan benefits give you comprehensive support to quit tobacco. All members are eligible for this program at no cost.
- Consultations with Quit Coach who understands the challenges of quitting and can help you stay on track or get back on track.
- Materials to help you plan and commit to a personalized Quit for Life program
- Nicotine replacement therapy
- Coverage of certain prescribed medications to help you quit
Many have been able to quit on their own, but the chances of being successful are eight times greater with support. Whatever your reasons for wanting to quit, start your plan today!
Connect with a coach over the phone or using live chat to create a personalized quit plan and get support every step of the way. You’ll also get access to resources to help you manage your triggers and overcome your cravings.
Call Quit For Life® at 1-866-QUIT-4-LIFE (1-866-784-8454) to opt in or out of the program. There is also a chat feature. Call 877-719-9004 with any questions about the site or your program.
PEBB members who use tobacco have $25 deducted monthly from their pay to offset the known risks for health care costs they bring to their health plan. You can end the deduction after you quit by completing a Mid-year Change form.
Members who use tobacco also have higher rates for optional life insurance. They can get the lower non-tobacco rate when they don't use tobacco for 12 months prior to the next open enrollment. - Smoking cessation classes
To find a class or provider near you, view our class list. (Classes are valued at $250 each, and are free to health plan members.)

Type 2 Diabetes: Are you at risk?
Type 2 diabetes happens when your body can't use insulin the right way or when the pancreas can't make enough insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that helps the body's cells use sugar (glucose) for energy. It also helps the body store extra sugar in muscle, fat, and liver cells. Without insulin, this sugar can't get into your cells to do its work. It stays in your blood instead. Your blood sugar level then gets too high. High blood sugar can harm many parts of the body, such as the eyes, heart, blood vessels, nerves, and kidneys. It can also increase your risk for other health issues.
Type 2 diabetes is different from type 1 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system destroys the cells that release insulin, so that over time the body can't produce insulin at all. In type 2 diabetes, the body still makes some insulin, but it can't use it the right way.
What you can do
- Know the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes
- Take the American Diabetes Association’s diabetes risk test and encourage the ones you love to take it too.
- Take a class to learn more about Type 2 diabetes
- Join a diabetes support group
- Know the most appropriate way to shop and eat when you live with diabetes
- Call a care nurse at 800-662-1121 or email CareManagement@Providence.org

More information on diabetes
Nearly 25.8 million people — or slightly more than 8 percent of the total U.S. population — have some form of diabetes, whether type 1, type 2 or gestational, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, more concerning, is that 79 million Americans age 20 and older are considered prediabetic. Are you among them? If you think you may be prediabetic, or have been told that you are, the good news is that with some major changes to diet and exercise routines — and by achieving and maintaining a healthy weight — you can significantly lower their risk of going on to develop type 2 diabetes.
Whether you're diabetic or prediabetic, we have wonderful programs and resources to help you find support and treatment, and find new ways to live a healthy — and full — life. Diabetes doesn't have to define you.- Providence Health Coaching
Whether you'd like to increase your activity level, reduce stress, improve your eating habits, lose weight, quit tobacco or just feel better every day, a Providence Health Coach can help.
