Gender-Affirming Care
Giving you the tools you need to get the care you deserve
What is gender-affirming care?
Gender-affirming care is life-saving healthcare and support for those across the gender spectrum. This can range from behavioral health services, medical care, and sometimes social services. Gender-affirming care benefits provided by Providence Health Plan align with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care. Examples of the services covered by Providence Health Plan include:
- Behavioral Health Services – From counseling and therapy to specialized mental health professionals, Providence offers a suite of services that allow you to choose the best path towards getting the care you need. For more information on Providence’s Behavioral Health Suite of Services read here.
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) – A common treatment option for people seeking gender-affirming care can involve access to the hormones to help align someone’s body with their gender identity. This is best started through partnership with your primary care provider (PCP) to discuss the options available to you. Your PCP or another medical professional can also assist in monitoring of hormone levels and side effects.
- Surgical Interventions – Another common avenue for people seeking gender-affirming care can include surgical interventions. Your PCP can help connect you to surgeons who specialize in gender-affirming care in the area. These procedures may include things such as gender confirmation surgery and facial feminization/masculinization surgery. Your PCP and your surgeon offer support throughout your entire journey, from pre-operative support through post-operative care.
How to get started
We know that not one person’s experience, or goals, are the same. Having you lead the way in what is best for you, is at the heart of how we support our members. We are here to support and connect you to the services and care needed to live your life, the way you want.
Here are a few ways to learn more about what’s available to you and how best to access gender-affirming care and services:
-
Reach out to your PCP or a behavioral health specialist if you’re already being seen by one
- Be prepared to discuss with them what your goals are with your gender-affirming care journey. Including familiarizing yourself with the different medical or non-medical options that you are interested in exploring.
