This month’s caregiver spotlight features Jane Rembecki from Health Care Services
“I want everyone to feel special.” Getting to Know PHP Caregiver, Jane Rembecki
Throughout Jane Rembecki’s career in the healthcare industry, helping others has remained at the forefront of her daily motivation. Currently, Jane serves as a Providence Health Plan (PHP) caregiver in the healthcare services department and has been with the organization since 2019. Jane supports provider reconsiderations, where she reviews appeals for provider claims and authorizations. In this role, she is focused on addressing any concerns health care providers have around decisions made by the health plan, working to resolve appeals in members’ best interests.
After working for 15 years as a product specialist at Adidas, Jane was inspired to seek a new, fulfilling career path. While working at a Portland-area medical clinic, Jane discovered how much she enjoyed serving patients and moved to the neurological department at Providence St. Vincent’s Medical Center in 2016.
When Jane joined PHP in a claims-focused role, it was an area where she had some familiarity and found value in her perspective from her time at Providence St. Vincent’s Medical Center. “Making the move was really interesting. I was coming from the other side and from a role where I was requesting medical authorizations and now, I was starting to review them. I found that having the previous experience and background knowledge was really beneficial.”
Jane has also found inspiration in knowing she is making a difference in the lives of members and is committed to providing them with the best possible healthcare experience. An avid believer in treating others with empathy and compassion, Jane is proud to work for PHP knowing that the organization treats its community of members with respect and kindness. “I enjoy working for PHP knowing that everybody – caregivers, members, and individuals in our communities – are all treated well.” Jane also enjoys the sense of accomplishment she feels by helping members. “I want to make sure that members are getting the care and the services they deserve. Although I am helping them in a different way compared to my previous patient-facing roles, it is important to me that I am still helping them in some way.”
Jane’s compassion for others also extends to her fellow caregivers and she continues to show appreciation for others, especially in a remote working environment. “I want everyone to feel special. I keep track of everybody's birthdays in our department, and I make sure everyone in the department knows and would bring in treats to celebrate.” She also believes that the smallest act of sending a team email helps to make everyone feel included. “I think it is important to keep up communication as a group and will send emails to wish everyone a happy Friday or see how everyone is doing.”
Living out PHP’s Mission, Jane has found several ways to give back to those in need within her community. She previously volunteered for Meals on Wheels where she delivered meals to families and has also planned canned food drives. Each holiday season, she organizes groups to buy gifts for families in need and donated groceries to the Western Farmworkers Association this past Christmas. Jane also volunteered at a COVID vaccine clinic offered by Providence and was inspired by the positivity she witnessed on-site. “It reminded me of a celebration where people were so happy to be getting vaccinated. It was a really spirited environment where clinic workers were being thanked for their involvement and volunteers were thanking people for coming in to get vaccinated.”
Outside of work, Jane is a self-described “animal nut” who has rescued seven total pets over the years, including the four she still has today. She also has two sons who she cites as her biggest role models. “They are such positive, caring and empathetic people. They are always looking to brighten my day or suggest things we can do together, even if it is to go for a walk.”
