Know Providence Health Plan’s New Chief Operating Officer
In June, Providence Health Plan (PHP) welcomed Cheryl Morrison as our new Chief Operating Officer (COO). As COO, Cheryl is responsible for the day-to-day operational and administrative functions of PHP. Cheryl also oversees the Transformation Office for PHP, where she plays a critical role in shaping growth strategies. Cheryl is joining PHP from Blue Shield of California, with healthcare industry experience spanning over 20 years.
We are thrilled to have Cheryl as part of the PHP family and recently sat down with her to learn more about her vision for PHP and discuss her experience as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer!
What about PHP’s Mission resonates with you the most?
As a child of deaf parents, I realized at a young age that having access to supportive and reliable healthcare is important for all people, especially those most vulnerable. I share in PHP’s belief that everyone deserves access to the absolute best care, whenever they need it. I’m proud to be a caregiver and am committed to putting members first and bettering the overall health of our communities.
What are you most excited to accomplish in your new role as COO?
I’m impressed with the growth that PHP has experienced over the past few years and am looking forward to helping to continue this progress. As COO, my goal is to help ground the organization with a strategy and then roadmap to support PHP’s expansion and help even more people achieve well-rounded lives through the benefits and resources PHP offers. I’m also excited to work with my fellow caregivers to uncover new and innovative ways we can continue to provide members with high-quality care and a simplified experience.
Can you share how you are involved with the community/give back to your community?
I’m a volunteer soccer coach for a youth girl’s league and a founding member of San Francisco’s women-only executive leadership group, Chief. I love helping others develop skills to be successful in their personal lives and careers, so I mentor people from diverse backgrounds and ages to hone those skills.
I also have a special interest in women’s issues, specifically how we can help working moms or future mothers-to-be find a balance between their work and home lives. I’m also an advocate for donating as often as possible and am teaching my children the value of giving back. Each month, I ask them to go through their clothes and toys to see what they can give away.
Any fun facts/hobbies/interests you would like to share?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, music, dancing, and love to travel. I’m also a yoga fan and find it helps me relax and find balance in my everyday life. During the pandemic, I learned how to wake surf and discovered how much I enjoy that activity along with spending time in nature. I love being near water and visiting trails and other areas where I can enjoy a long walk.
Recently, I’ve learned the value of taking the time for self-care. I find I’m a better version of myself and a better mom when I take time in a very intentional and caring way. It’s not always easy to do, but even small steps such as meditation, reading, and taking a break from an overloaded schedule can have a tremendous impact on my wellbeing.
